District 5-5A Schedule
» Justin Northwest - 14, Keller Central - 34
» Grapevine - 26, Colleyville Heritage - 23
» Keller - 48, Fossil Ridge - 28
Color me a little impressed that Grapevine's turnaround season now includes a win over Heritage. They go to the D2 playoffs as the #1 seed from the district. I'm not 100% sure, but I'd be willing to go with the odds that the results in District 6 make our first opponent Flower Mound. I'm hoping the big newsies and/or UIL do the bracketing work for me. Tie-breakers and weird rules are the norm for this time of season.
District 6-5A Schedule
» Coppell - 45, Flower Mound - 21
» Flower Mound Marcus - 35, Hebron - 28
District 7-5A Schedule
» Irving MacArthur - 20, Irving - 3
» Grand Prairie - 25, S. Grand Prairie - 17
District 8-5A Schedule
» Plano - 21, Dallas Jesuit - 12
» McKinney Boyd - 16, Plano East - 38
I'm saving most of the playoff stuff for when I have time to tend to tie-breakers and whatnot. But it appears that Plano is in ... and that counts as a surprise right there. I guess if there's some sense of solace in that, it's that Plano shouldn't be expected to accomplish much beyond this point.
Region One/Metroplex Games
» Amarillo - 52, Lubbock - 7
» Midland - 31, Odessa Permian - 35
» Richland - 30, Haltom - 34
» Burleson - 30, Weatherford - 27
The loss by Odessa does nothing for the overall ordering of District 2-5A. But I believe the strong finish by Odessa Permian makes them a bit of a threat in the portion of the bracket they share with Trinity. The last two games in this section all add up to Weatherford being the odd-team out in District 3. That, and I'm a bit partial to Richland in their rivalry matchup against Haltom.
Houston Area Games
» Dobie - 0, Pearland - 42
» Kingwood - 7, Atascocita - 31
» Chavez - 21, Westside - 24
» Spring Westfield - 21, Spring - 13
» Pasadena Memorial - , Deer Park -
» Dickinson - 21, Clear Springs - 33
» Lufkin - 51, Oak Ridge - 7
» FB Clements - 14, FB Kempner - 11
» Manvel - 28, Angleton - 17
» Sharpstown - 31, Reagan - 0
Man, let's start with the 4A schools of choice here ... Manvel ends Angleton's hopes for an undefeated season and Sharpstown somehow manages to end the season with a 5-1 district record and headed back to the playoffs. Even odder, it looks as if Manvel might have the tie-breaker over their fellow 3-4 district rival, Santa Fe. So Manvel makes the trip to the playoffs as well. Very improbable finishes ... I had both schools out of the hunt at the halfway mark.
Elsewhere In Texas
» Copperas Cove - 32, Harker Heights - 14
» Tyler Lee - 24, North Mesquite - 3
» Del Rio - 50, Laredo Martin - 7
» Brownsville Pace - 7, Brownsville Hanna - 28
» Bryan - 7, Belton - 34
Tyler Lee starts off 1-4, losing to beatable competition, yet finishes in a 3-way tie for District 11. I'll be shocked if they're good enough to win Region Two, but they should make it worth earning, whichever division they fall in. Speaking of Region Two's strength this season ... Garland's defense allows 10.8 pts per game, are 8-1 and won their district with a perfect 6-0 record. And they're not even ranked after an early-season loss. They're good. And they're likely only "runner-up" good. One reason why: Stony Point's defense allows only 9.4 points per game.
