High School Football Rundown: Week Seven

Not posting this in place of the usual Fri/Sat lull ... but rather to just get it posted without losing any of the posts from later today and tomorrow beneath a long post. I'll uodate this one as soon as the Friday night scores are in.

16t. P.A. Memorial 5-2 W G.P. North Shore, 7-6 Baytown Sterling, 63-42 NR
18. Belton 6-1 L A&M Consolidated, 28-0 @ Copperas Cove. 0-10 NR

Well, I figured if there was an upset possibility, it might be at either #1 or #2. No dice. Interestingly, Stony Point managed to be the biggest nail-biter of the bunch. Welcome to district play! The Southlake Carroll/Marcus game looks a bit daunting in light of Marcus being a potential bi-district opponent for Trinity. And the Port Arthur Memorial score-fest looks a bit intriguing in light of the D-fest, 7-6 win against North Shore a week ago. Belton losing to Copp Cove can't rank as a surprise. Watch and see of Cove gets a vote or two to return to the overall rankings.

District 5-5A Schedule
» Colleyville - 21, LD Bell - 10
» Fossil Ridge - 33, Grapevine - 38
» Keller - 56, Justin Northwest - 41

An interesting outcome by Grapevine, who had to come from behind to defeat a winless team. Either that woke them up sufficiently to make a good run at Trinity next week, or it's a sign of what we might be able to do to them in that game. Northwest's scoring proves that it was a good weekend for district bottom-feeders. Keller's supposedly a decent team and putting up 41 against them ain't bad.

District 6-5A Schedule
» Hebron - 32, Coppell - 38
» Lewisville - 28, Flower Mound - 55

One note of interest from the Southlake Carroll game is the performance of QB David Piland (a Coog prospect). He's been splitting time under center, but this week went 23-25 for 295 yards and 2 TDs. There's something to be said for having a prospect behind Case Keenum that can throw high-percentage passes. Everything else played out pretty much to form in the district.

District 7-5A Schedule
» S. Grand Prairie - 24, Irving - 22
» Irving Nimitz - 10, Irving MacArthur - 21

Tough loss for Nimitz, but it's truly Cedar Hill's district for the taking.

District 8-5A Schedule
» Dallas Jesuit - 14, Plano West - 49
» Plano East - 38, Wylie - 23

Plano East remains undefeated in district play, but they've got a tough finish to the season, with Plano West, Allen, and an unpredictable McKinney Boyd team. Plano West has at least gotten their loss to Allen out of the way. Expect both to make the cut for the playoffs.

Region One/Metroplex Games
» Garland - 14, Garland Rowett - 5
» Lubbock - 12, Odessa Permian - 42
» Mesquite Horn - 21, North Mesquite - 23
» Celina (#17/3A) - 14, Prosper (#13/3A) - 38

Odessa Permian is rebounding. They're 4-2 in district play, which puts them in a 3-team pool battling for the final two spots. Their district gets an even more important sorting next weekend with district leaders Odessa and Amarillo facing off.

Houston Area Games
» Cinco Ranch - 40, Morton Ranch - 0
» Cy Woods - 23, Cy Springs - 13
» Pearland - 13, Pasadena Memorial - 28
» Manvel - 7, Sante Fe - 3
» Sharpstown - 27, Austin - 12
» Klein - 28, Spring DeKaney - 27
» Aldine - 14, Atascocita - 21
» Aldine Nimitz - 6, Eisenhower - 17

About the only Friday night game of note here is the loss by Pearland. They lose to a quality Memorial team, but it's still a bit discomforting to not see Pearland tearing it up late in the season.

Elsewhere Outside Texas
» Indianola Academy (MS) - 6, Marshall Academy (MS) - 19
» Capitol (LA) - 34, Donaldsonville (LA) - 32

An exciting game in Baton Rouge, with Terrance Broadway's Capitol High team facing off against a state-ranked district opponent. Three lead changes, three TDs of over 60 yards - one of them a pick-six, overtime, and a stuffed 2-point conversion at the end were the draw. Broadway finishes with a so-so 7-12 for 170 yards and 2 TDs.
