Harris County 2008 Presidential Results
Stiles gets an unofficial canvass for Harris County and gets to mapping.
As expected, several west Harris County precincts (north of I-10, west of the beltway) flipped blue for the Presidential race. Harris County Democrats, meet the new Hispanic voters of Harris County. In and of itself, that's an enormous shift in the past decade-plus. Two precincts near Jersey Village (225 & 512) flipped, which I had some sense of from working with the Skelly campaign.
Some surprises from my neck of the woods: Pcts. 626, 620, 510, and 645 are huge swing precincts. Of the bunch, only one - 645 - went for a single Dem in 2006 (that being Hubert Vo). Pct. 620 has been one of the fastest-growing precincts on the west side and much of that growth has been among Dem-friendly demographics. On this one, I merely say "About dang time!" 626 is one that I had an inkling of hope for, but even that flip is a pleasant surprise to me.
To a slightly lesser extent, Sharpstown's shift to blue is noticable, with Pct. 256 going for a Dem President for the first time in a long time. A slight surprise not seeing a blue precinct in West U. ... or even Southside Place. Some obvious details of interest downballot to look for there once I get my grubby hands on data.
Over on the north side of town, there's a bit more blue north of 1960. Again ... meet the new Hispanic voters of Harris County.
Obviously, a good year means a lot of interesting new developments in the map. Aside from the obvious intoxication, it'll be interesting to see the map for Adrian Garcia and also the relative performance in different parts of the county for the various county administrative races.
