Woodfill: Obama Is the New Hillary (well, really more like the *old* Hillary)
Too damn funny ...
For months, Republican activists in the Houston area have been wishing out loud that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton would win the Democratic presidential nomination. Conservatives' visceral dislike for the former first lady would drive them to the polls in November to vote against her, the theory went, and help negate Democrat-friendly demographic changes in Harris County that otherwise could place the county's many elected positions into Democratic hands for the first time in 14 years. But now that it looks like Barack Obama could clinch the nomination tonight, county GOP chairman Jared Woodfill has a different view.
In December, when Republicans cultivated their Clinton wish, "Nobody knew who Barack Obama was," Woodfill said today. "Now we are discovering who he is. At the same time, Sen. Clinton has become more popular and less vitriolic, shall we say . . . I think that the table has completely turned in the last six months."
Yeah, it pains me to ding someone who goes to the same church as me, but here we are.
I wonder if we're now going to see Paul Burka declaring that an Obama nomination is what Speaker Craddick really wanted all along (after lunch with a Republican strategist, of course). Some of us (even the Obama-supporting Kuff) were calling BS on the whole "Hillary Dooms Texas Dems" nonsense from the get-go. I can only wonder how many weak-kneed Dems out there are crying about all the whackos that'll come out of the woodworks to vote Republican just because Obama's middle name is Hussein.

In other words "Prominent Republican discovers he doesn't like some particular Democrat". Whoda ever thunk it?
Oh, and lest I forget: What's the over/under on the blogHouston contingent doing a concern troll routine about the Dems nominating that nasty, divisive, and unelectable Obama guy, instead of that nice, moderate, bipartisan Hillary they've always admired and respected and maybe could have voted for if only the Democrats had been wise enough to choose her?
Precisely. I mean, we all know the only Democrat the GOP was going to forfeit against was Mark Warner!
My vote is that it happens in the same timely manner in which they bemoaned the 2006 elections not being run on the national economy. Which is to say, "after the results are in." Given their track record of political prognostications, I can't say I blame them for avoiding any conversation on the topic. At least in a timely and meaningful manner, that is.
I think our problem with Obama as the candidate -- and I am an Obama delegate, so don't misunderstand my intent here -- our problem is that there is a terrible amount of hatred and bigotry toward him in the party. I've been talking to folks who always vote Democratic -- Kerry, Gore, Clinton, Dukakis, you name it -- who are livid with fury over Obama. I'm talking about severely different ethnic backgrounds with one thing in common: they swear they will never vote for Obama. Some support Clinton, but largely as a way of opposing Obama. Some are honest and calm about it, others are so filled with rage they can't see straight. They are beyond facts and reason. At one point I saw Obama as a unifying candidate, but now I fear just the opposite. I think we are seeing proof that diversity divides.
It pains me to say that I sorta agree with Woodfill. Gregg, who long championed Hill, surely agrees with Kuff's argument about the misstreatment of the former First.
Seeing Kuff use the "patently obvious bias detector" suggests that maybe he has more in common with bloghouston than he lets on!
Furthermore, does it reeeeaaaallly fit the definition of trolling to criticize the other party in a partisan election? Whatever. I'll do my best to live up. Oh wait, I forgot yall are all about younity. That means I best shut. Opinions are soooooo divisive. Elections are divisive too. I mean, c'mon! I have to pick one over the other? Who came up with this stuff??
I dunno. I think if one were to try and have something in common with hateHouston, they might point out that "yall" should have an apostrophe, make a food reference that about five people get, toss in a personal insult and imply a superior intellect based on all of the above.
But fear not ... your temporary, secret agreement with Landfill is safe with me and the coupla dozen folks who read this blog. Wait, is "coupla" a real word? Dangit! There goes the entire underlying logic of my point!!!
