Unity Gain

One really sweet find that makes my day: AmazonMP3 for "Unity Gain" by the Steve Morse Band.

Not that I'm the biggest Steve Morse fan in the world, but this is one of those rare tunes that I can actually say I had to pull my car over to make sure I didn't miss any part of it the first time I heard it. Just a great jazzy instrumental with enough show-off material that spoke rather loudly to my inner guitarist.

On that note, Amazon is gradually (and pleasantly) filling out their offerings of MP3s. I don't have a recent comparison to iTunes, so I won't jab at my Apple-loving friends and co-workers just yet. But I'm obviously well beyond pleased with this find. Still a bit thin on the indie stuff in my range of taste and also my archaic collection of Christian heavy metal that could use some updates.

You ever listen to any old Pat Metheny Group? "American Garage" and other things roughly 1978-1985? (I still like him a lot, but back then was when he had more rock in his music...).

I never quite got into Metheny's work. Around the time I found this song on my radio dial was when I was going through folks like Corea, Metheny, McLaughlin, Holdsworth, etc .... Most of them proved a bit too eclectic for my taste, with a minor exception of Corea. Oddly enough, I did appreciate Jeff Golub's first instrumental CD after leaving Bill Squier. Even more oddly, I suppose, is that the Steve Morse album with "Unity Gain" was the only one of his albums I got into.
