Monday Aggreposting: Sports Edition
With the football season winding down, I honestly feel as if maybe that pushes me to work in as much as possible around this time of the year. But part of the reality is that whenever there's a UH coaching gig open, I have a habit of tracking that pretty closely. Add to that, my old school is still alive in the playoffs. Truly, a perfect storm for aggreposting ...
» Following up on this post, it appears that North Shore & Galena Park will be kicking off at Rice Stadium this Saturday. 3pm gametime is kinda tough for me to work into the schedule. Ah well.
» Trinity also gets another day of love in the Dallas Morning News. Yeah, we still run the ball a lot. There's yer story.
» No real news to report on the UH coaching front. Michael Murphy has a somewhat vapid take on the search. My hunch is that he was just looking for an excuse to work the graphic into a post. But it seems to me that if you want to really poke a stick at the "usual suspects" meme of coach shopping, the UH situation doesn't exactly strike me as the one to do so with.
» Back to my series of rants about the critical timing of putting UH alum, Kevin Kolb, into a game for the Philadelphia Eagles .... Sooner rather than later is still my battlecry. The Eagles haven't performed poorly with AJ Feeley under center. McNabb made his return this past weekend. Same result. The games they've lost, they seem to find ways to just barely lose: 13-16 this past Sunday after a FG attempt bounces off the goal post; a 4-pt loss to the Seahawks; a 3-pt loss to the world-beating Patriots. All that and Feeley is still chucking along with a QB rating of 61.2. Yawn.
Next up are the Cowboys. Kolb's a Stephenville kid. The Cowboys aren't quite the Patriots (a point the Patriots seemed intent to impress on the Cowboys earlier in the season), but some of the same impetus to see what the kid has learned still applies. I mean, there's going to come a time, hopefully no more than 3-4 years from now, when Kolb will be in a big game with playoff implications (or survival) on the line. Which would you rather say as a coach:
a) We've seen what Kolb had in a big game in his rookie season, or
b) I think he took good notes from AJ Feeley in his rookie season.
The Philly Inq's Phil Sheridan notes that with a playoff possibility not mathematically disqualified, McNabb should get his last start as an Eagle. He then goes on to make the case for Kolb if that outting fails to chalk up a win:
The Eagles know where McNabb is. They must either decide to believe he will be better after another off-season or that this is as good as he's going to get, then make a final evaluation on their badly muddled quarterback situation. That means learning something about Kolb. Now that A.J. Feeley has played his way out of consideration as a stopgap, it comes down to No. 5 or No. 4: McNabb based on what he has been or Kolb based on what he might be.
Maybe that's more realistic. We'll see.
