Krugman v Obama on Health Care

Krugman bonks Obama on an issue where, strangely, I agree more with Obama than I do with HRC. Namely, the question of forcing everyone to buy health insurance as part of any goal of making health care universal.

Krugman believes it boxes Obama in if he's elected. Thinking being that most of the GOP will oppose universal health care on principle and that Obama might be forced to accept the principle of coercion to attain it, which would then make the GOP's case easier since they can borrow Obama's material.

I think Krugman's boxed himself into a limited view here. To at least my way of thinking, the optimal path for universal health care is found in fixing the business model. Find some way to reduce a plan down to $49/month or $99/month and you'll solve far more of the problem than most of what's being considered. Make health care about as expensive as cable television, and the choice for most families gets simplified. And if you want to upgrade, there's that option also. How to accomplish that?
