Martin's Memoir

On the eve of Thanksgiving, I'll leave you with a simple read for the day ...

Steve Martin: Writing what he knows best

The first chapter of Steve Martin's book is also online here. I'll be diving headfirst into as much material as I can physically crank out over the holiday weekend, unleashing it gradually over the span of the next two weeks or so. So why not enjoy something lighthearted in the meantime?

That said, there's something about Martin's writing that at least this blogger can appreciate:

The appeal of writing, he added, was that "I feel like I can get to the point where I know I did the best I can. I really love the sense of finality in writing, the sense of getting it right in a way that only I can know about. In comedy, if they're not laughing, there's no doubt."

Blogging strikes me as something of a middle ground between the two. Yes, there's a finality to some written product, but what you're really doing is just taking snapshots along the way of some intellectual journey. And if you're merely sitting still, the pictures get real boring real fast. And yet, as bloggers, we rarely seem to take the time to note the movement that we should be encountering. That is, in a way, some of the what the next two weeks will be about here. More time may or may not be a necessity ... we'll see how it pans out once the ball is rolling.
