Watts, Out
U.S. Senate candidate Mikal Watts withdraws from race
Wow. That's all that should probably be needed to say, I suppose. But I can't help but rewind to my talk with Mikal. One of the final points I raised was why there was a need to "explore" the race. I jokingly offered that it's not like you'd expect anyone to go through all the trouble (and expense) only to say "Never mind" at the end of it all. Watts confidently laughed and suggested that we'd not be hearing a "Never mind."
Guess what? Never mind.
And with that, I just offer my own hearty "Get 'em Rick." I've felt that both Noriega and Watts would have been great Senators for this state and I'd be negligent in my duties to say that I admired Watts' ability to stand in the race - on whatever basis, for however long - as a pro-life Democrat. There's still some upgrades that Team Noriega needs to make if they're to be credible and viable beyond a Democratic Primary. I sincerely hope he makes them.

Ever since Mikal Watts bragged about his purchased influence of Democratic judges, I thought that there was no way he or his politics would be good for Texas.
Now we don't have to worry about that. If Rep. Noriega is truly the man of integrity and honesty I believe him to be, he should distance himself from the shady lawyer Watts.
I hope that this does not mean we just conceded the race to Cornyn.
I have heard talk that Noriega was seeking the nomination so he could raise his statewide profile in preparation for a serious run for Lieutenant Governor in 2010. When I saw that Noriega had only $500,000 cash in the campaign fund (Cornyn has 13 times as much and Watts had more than Cornyn), I started to believe these rumors about the true nature of Noriega's campaign.
Now that Watts is out, I just don't see any realistic pathway to victory against Cornyn.
