Small Tent Kool-Aid

Shorter Vince (ie - weeding out the ads, socnets, blegs, and other miscellany): "There's no room in the Texas Democratic Party for anyone who's pro-life."

It doesn't surprise me that the issue is a contentious one between pro-choice Noriega and pro-life Watts. And it should no longer qualify as a shock to see the draftniks want to make more of any issue than should be made (save for Bob Perry's donations). But if the Vince Leibowitz's of the world truly want to peel off Democratic voters who are pro-life, I don't think the far left Texas blogosphere should be shocked if the result is far fewer voters voting for their candidates. Run-everywhere or not, there's a certain folly attached to that way of thinking.

By way of underscoring just how awful it's gotten, here's a snippet of Vince's logic: "Ironically, a Democrat running for U.S. Senate could not have a more Republican talking point." Really??? Iraq, Iran, more and more tax cuts for the wealthy, denial of global warming, SCHIP ... all of those are now secondary? Perhaps I should alert the Lieberman office that bloggers are suddenly warming up!

Seriously, is logic now completely out the window with the TexRoots? ... sorry, TexRoots(tm).

The TexRoots(tm) is doing its best to lose this election.

The truth is that Texas is a pretty damn red state.

The truth is that 25% of Texans oppose abortion under all circumstances, 40% of Texans share Watts' personal view that opposes abortion except when there has been a rape, incest, or a threat to the mother's health, and only 35% of Texans support unrestricted abortion.

The truth is that Noriega worked his ass off during the last legislative session to make himself appear more moderate so he could run credibly in a statewide election; after being a champion of undocumented immigrants' rights, he voted against the progressive coalition to deny undocumented children CHIP care, and after talking up his support for a broader definition of marriage, he backed off to support Chisum's traditional marriage bill.

The TexRoots(tm) are doing everything in their power to make Noriega out to be a completely unelectable liberal. They are positioning Watts as a stronger general election candidate by pretending that he's less progressive than he is on 99% of the issues.

In short, the TexRoots(tm) are trying to kill Watts in the primary and Noriega in the general election. Cornyn must be laughing his ass off!

I reply:

That's not what I said and you know it. Furthermore, your action of taking what I never said, didn't say, and would never say and putting it in the form of a quotation is perhaps one of the most deceptive blogging practices I've ever seen.

Vince,

I offered a rather standard qualifier that this was a summary of your viewpoint, not a direct quote. So get off your cross. Unless you're willing to claim Atrios and Jerome Armstrong of the same thing (since they engage in the same standard) you accuse me of, you're just being petty.

In the meantime, you're more than welcome to refute the characterization. But after reading your post, I'm more than willing to defend my take.
