While We're on the Topic of Residency ...
Matt Stiles gets his scalp ... congrats, Matt. Ironically, I'd have put money on Zaf being the one who lost the most with Matt's two-day residence-a-thon. Little did I know that Jack "Where's" Christie would just give up so easily.
Wonder when our itrepid paper will carry it's Residency Crusade over to State Senator Kyle Janek's house ... in Austin. For a part-time gig in the lege, that sure is a big house (with a rather spacious game room). Considering he's already sold his home in the district, maybe a little equal-opportunity outrage ought to apply. Or does the Chronicle not bother with such intricacies when it's an incumbent we're talking about?
As for At-Large 5 ... interesting fall-out. Advantage Jo-Jo, but I'm suddenly a bit more interested in Marlon Barabin.

I may be showing my grassroots Republican miles here, but as I recall, Christie gave up his State Board of Education seat after surviving a primary challenge. Despite winning the election, he gave up soon after. This is a guy who really doesn't like the heat. Wonder why he chose Houston.
Interesting about Janek. Yes, plenty of hypocrisy to go round. Apparently, some people take your "run everywhere" advice a little too literally.
To answer your question - Yes. In trying to make sense of Chron endorsements they like incumbents. The only cases where that doesn't apply is when a politician does something to make the Chron ed board turn against them and then they will never support him or her again.
I remember reading somewhere that after Janek sold his house in West U he moved down to Galveston, still in his district. I know he has that huge place in Austin, but I'm pretty sure he's still in his district, sending his kids to local schools.
