Ten Percent, Redux
An observation: there's this rightwing blog from this fine town, whose only mission in life is to see to it that the 801 Texas be levelled, the Texas Republican Party to adopt their talking points re: Bill White, and Metro to go back to horse and buggy as a means of transportation.
Among the cranks at the expense of the Chron are these:
- That the DC Bureau should be shuttered
- That the Chron's use of televised news reports as a source warrants a dose of mockery
So my question is this: if they were to somehow follow through on the first, wouldn't that compound the problem of the second item? Oh, and nevermind all those KHOU reports they get from neighborhood newspapers. Apparently news you CAN get elsewhere is as fleeting a concern (that is to say, a faux concern) as any other of the 10% Club.
As for those concerns, there's a new maxim going around these days: How do you know the City Pension deal is a good one? Apparently by virtue of the fact that the aforementioned bloggers don't have anything more to say about it. Then again, maybe that's not accurate. I mean, they sure seemed to know better than the board of Houston's Center for Retardation about whether private ownership was a better route for the non-profit group. Then (yet) again, there was a jab to be jousted at the mayor over that one. Priorities for ya.
Slight tangent here ... I'm reminded of a conversation I had with another friend some time back. He thoroughly hates the mayor (and a lot of other people in the world, it turns out) and is obviously somewhere to the right of Attila. Never let it be said that I don't run with a diverse crowd. Turns out, though, he hated every Houston mayor. Which led me to this hypothesis: maybe it's not Mayor White they really hate, not THIS mayor they dislike - but it's ANY mayor of Houston they dislike.
Ah well, maybe this'll be the year that they double their ranks in November and we'll have to rename them the "20% Club."
Whatever, Greg, you know that Westpark means Westpark Dr. and that the Mayor hates the mentally disabled.
You slay me, Alex.
I was with some people in Clear Lake the other day and someone pontificated about the last mayoral election and the two candidates who supported rail which obviously would never work in a city of Houston's population density. He then claimed that whoever voted for Bill White should have realized that he would immediately steal the pensions from public employees to pay for the rail system.
This was such a mishmash of non-connected misinformation with no positive counter-proposals and to no purpose but Democrat bashing that I just shook my head, not knowing where to begin.
Try asking: "So do you buy the tin foil hats in bulk, or just look for a good sale every now and then?"
Crude, but it gets the job done.
Shutter the Chron's D.C. bureau? That's not a good idea. Really.
And, will Republicans ever not have their panties in a wad about Metro. Come on, Greg, we know the answer to that: they don't want (a) poor people to be able to get to work and (b) want to make sure people have to buy gas to fill the oil companies big, fat, back pockets. :)
Pass me that tinfoil hat, por favor.
