Two Quick Reads for the Busy Week
Sorry, busy week here at GO, Inc ... what with all the plots to take over the world and whatnot. That said, read these two links if you read nothing else this week:
» TNR: An interview with Charles Barkley. Beyond Basketball: Race, Class, and Politics (Isaac Chotiner)
» AFJ: A failure in generalship (Lt. Col. Paul Yingling)
Two very different topics, but both are priceless.

I thought that interview was pretty wild. Am I the only one who remembers active Republican Charles Barkley?
I love the pickup, and I admire, respect, and appreciate people who change their political positions in response to real changes.
I do not, however, go in for people claiming that they haven't changed their positions.
So it makes me wonder, now that we've got him (and a lot of others like him), what do do we need to do keep him?
I think the interview also props one of the best things about John Edwards: people like it when Democrats talk about poor folks, social programs, and real change.
Good work, new New Republic!
I do find it rather convenient that Barkley refers to his one-liner re: being a Republicans compared to say ... his quotes from the Rush Limbaugh show.
Still, there's a lot to be said for such relatively apolitical people being truer to themselves than a political party, as you suggest. What to do to keep him? I don't know there's anything overt to do except continue talking about building the ladder of opportunity from the bottom up. If folks follow, great. If they don't, I'll be content to address those issue from the wilderness.
