Bringing in the Eaves

Just for the record, I'm really kinda liking this guy:

[John Arthur] Eaves roots his populism in the same evangelical Christianity as his social positions. "A lot of people ask me, 'How are you a Democrat and a Christian?' " he says in his Jackson office, festooned with photos from his 1996 trip to Israel to baptize his sons. "And I say, 'Because I'm a Christian, I'm a Democrat.' Christ healed the sick, reached out to the poor and came to tell us the truth, which today would translate into support for health care and education. Christ came to help people, and I believe that's the role of the Democratic Party."

The column was penned by Dan Gilgoff, who's written a pretty exhaustive book on James Dobson. It's not a genre that threatens to pique my interest enough to pick up a copy, but it's interesting enough for me to at least sneak a peek at.

Eaves' website is a bit behind in terms of the blog. It'll be curious to see how much money he pours into the contest. The race is definitely uphill, but it'd do all involved a world of good to make Haley Barbour at least break a sweat.
