What is it with AP reporters covering Texas politicians?
» FWST: Hutchison willing to accept vice presidential nominationIf her party called, Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison says she'd agree to be its nominee for vice president. But, please don't call, the Texan said Tuesday.
Hutchison has left open the possibility of joining a national ticket. She churned the political speculation again with comments she made to the Washington Times, a conservative newspaper, during an editorial board meeting. Copies of the article with her comments were circulated by her Senate and campaign offices.
This is a twofer ... the generic suck-up of inquiring whether the politician on your beat is interested in a slot that's still far removed from the here and now ... PLUS the toe-tag-on-integrity of printing the politician's standoffish rejoinder so as to not appear so obvious that she's campaigning for the VP gig.
Wow, Suzanne Gamboa ... how DO you look at yourself in the mirror?

The Veep question was only one of many they asked her, but of course makes for more interesting headlines than partitioning Iraq. Although her name has frequently been thrown out for speculation, I've seen no evidence that Kay is campaigning for the spot, as Perry has awkwardly been doing for some time.
Regardless, methinks it might be a while before there's another Texan on the national ticket.
I cannot imagine the magnitude of the egotistical thinking that would provoke either Kay Bailey Hutchison or Rick Perry to be thinking of the vice presidency. For the Republican Party, post-Bush, wouldn't it seem logical that one would actually have to have leadership qualities to be considered national leadership material? And when was the last time a VP candidate was chosen who had not been actively campaigning for the presidency? Do they both expect to just sit back and be asked - to have their ring kissed? Fact is, Hutchison and Perry are two of the emptiest suits in a party full of empty suits.
