Klingler's Record Falls ... or does it?
» Chron: "Klingler's record falls in Hawaii Bowl" (AP)
HONOLULU — Hawaii's Colt Brennan broke the NCAA single-season record for touchdown passes Sunday, throwing his 54th, 55th, 56th, 57th and 58th in the Hawaii Bowl against Arizona State.Brennan threw a 7-yard pass to Ryan Grice-Mullen on the Warriors' second series of the second half to break the mark of 54 set by Houston's David Klingler in 1990, also against the Sun Devils.
...
The Western Athletic Conference offensive player of the year reached the milestone in his 14th game, while Klingler's 54 TD throws came in 11 games and before 2002, when bowl stats didn't count.
I caught most of the Hawaii Bowl and Colt Brennan is clearly an underappreciated QB. But AP gets to the asterisk-worthiness of the season touchdown record. Klingler's mark was set in 11 games with the Coogs ineligible for a bowl game (which wouldn't have counted toward Klingler's mark anyway). Brennan set the record in his 14th game of the season. Still impressive - much like Brennan's accuracy - but in my mind, the 11-game record still stands.
In other bowl news, Kuff is strangely short on words on Rice's showing in New Orleans. I only caught snippets of the game (and rebroadcast) over in the Continental Disitrict Friday night. I was hoping to see some sparkle from Rice's wide receiver and all I left with was a deep appreciation for how far Troy State has come as a football program. Yeah, Rice didn't do badly over the course of the season. And as a neighbor of the school, it's my practice to root for them so long as they aren't playing against us. With a little luck, they'll have a good team next season and the Rice-UH rivalry might once more pick up to the level it was back in my old "Klingler vs Hollas" days.
My Coogs get their season wrapup on Friday. Here's to hoping that Kevin Kolb ends his college career in a fitting manner.
