Game of the Century (So Far)

Yeah, just winding down the remaining workload. But one thing cannot just fall by the wayside - this week's game of the century. Not the heretical third NFL game being played on Thanksgiving night. Not the Aggie/T-sip game on Friday. Not even the December 1 showdown with the Coogs and an opponent to be named later for the esteemed Conference USA title.

Thus far, the game of the decade will be the Trinity Trojans vs. Southlake Carroll in the second round of the Texas High School playoffs. The teams, separated by all of 10 miles, meet for the first time as defending champions of their respective Class 5A divisions from the previous season. This season, each is undefeated. Carroll, with the longer tradition, is favored to win. Either way, it's a shame that a game of this caliber has to happen so early in the playoffs. Adding a few more grains of salt to that wound is the fact that Lufkin is in the same bracket, ensuring that the top 3 teams in the state will not be represented in the Quarterfinals.

The game has reached critical mass, apparently, with Katie Couric phoning Trinity Head Coach, Steve Lineweaver. The Dallas Morning News gives a lengthy treatment to profiling each school a skosh too stereotypically.

I'm on the fence for making a trip up there to stay with the parental units over Thanksgiving and catching the game Friday. If anyone's driving up that way, lemme know. That may make my decision a bit easier.

In any event, I'll put my faith in these guys ...
