Coogs Win Feline Bowl

The good news? Coogs beat another creampuff offering (apologies to the proud Grambling Tigers who read this blog). 42-22 was the final damage.

The bad news? Well, I'll let Michael Murphy tell it ...

The Cougars made a subtle change to their uniforms for Saturday's game against Grambling. At coach Art Briles' request players now have the snarling Cougar logo on their helmets. The decal is placed in the middle of each side, overlapping the point where the block letters U and H intersect.

"It's kind of like the University of Oregon and its uniforms," quipped UH athletics director Dave Maggard, referring to the Ducks' Nike-supplied multi-hued jerseys, pants, socks, shoes and helmets, which can produce a staggering 384 uniform combinations. "No, really it's not a big deal. It's something Art and I discussed last summer, and we finally decided to try it out for this game. It's just another variation on the Cougars logo; that's all."

It's the first time since 1961 that something other than the block UH logo has appeared on the Cougars' helmets.

Not a big deal? Come again? Look, I wasn't a fan of the fat-lettered logo, but I realize the trend toward appeasing the TV gods of readability. Wait, remind me again how many games we have on TV? ... REAL TV! Zippo!!!

To put it simply, I'm agin' it. Congrats on the win, team. Now go back to the skinny-lettering that was good enough to get us through a few Cotton Bowls, I say. Kolb's stats weren't anywhere near Heisman-esque. If it's not too early to pack in that short-lived fantasy, how about we call it even with a bowl game win?

UPDATE: The Chron finally has some photos up ...

I stand by and re-register my disapproval.
