The Trouble With Nedheads

My Way News - Some Dems Want Lieberman Out of Party

Curious degree of intellectualness on the part of Nedheads here ...

A group whose members described themselves as peace activists asked Sharon Ferrucci, New Haven's Democratic registrar of voters, to remove Lieberman from the party, arguing that he cannot be a Democrat while running under another party's banner.

The request could lead to a hearing in which Lieberman, the Democrats' vice presidential nominee in 2000, would have to argue that he still adheres to the party's principles.

"The law is pretty clear he is no longer a member of the Democratic Party in good standing," said group leader Henry Lowendorf. "There was an open vote and he was voted out. He joined a different party."

If Joe Lieberman was voted out of the Democratic Party in 2006, then Howard Dean was voted out in 2004. Just proves the point that the problem some have with the Democratic Party is that there's just too darned many of us around.

For better or worse, even Ned isn't in agreement with this sentiment:

Lamont distanced himself Monday from the peace activists' request. He told reporters that Lieberman should not be removed from the Democratic rolls, and that Lieberman has the right under state law to form the new party.

"He's got the right to run. It's not what I would have done," Lamont said.

Lieberman and Dean both lost the presidential primary in 2004.
Dean ran to be chairman of the DNC and won in 2005
Lieberman lost the Democratic Senatorial primary in 2006.
Lieberman then set up the "Connecticut for Lieberman" party in 2006.

Lieberman made an active choice to join a new political party. Dean simply became chairman of the one he's a member of.

A closer parallel is with New York's Mario Cuomo:

Cuomo was defeated by Ed Koch in the 1977 Democratic primary for the New York City mayoral election, but was nevertheless nominated by the Liberal Party. On the Liberal ticket in the general election, Cuomo once again lost narrowly to Koch. Cuomo was elected lieutenant governor on [Democratic Governor Hugh] Carey's ticket in 1978. He became governor in 1983, defeating Koch in the 1982 Democratic primary and Republican businessman Lewis Lehrman in the general election, and won election for three consecutive terms, serving until 1995.

Cuomo became a very popular figure with the Democratic party grassroots, not just in NY but nationwide. He gave a stirring keynote address at the 1984 convention in San Francisco, and he was on everybody's short list of presidential contenders.

Damn, R2 ... score yourself one for beating me to political trivia from the 1970s!

Did Cuomo run to the right in his bid on another party's ticket....

Is that to imply that there is no distance to the left that one can run and still be embraced by Democratic activists, KT?

It's simple. If Lieberman gets re-elected he will owe his political soul to the Republican party, and they WILL come to collect... it's the way they play the game. Love him or hate him, he's one of them now.
