Interning for Grampa's Intern

Interesting little tidbit to cross the wirestubes today ...

The grandson of the late Sen. William Proxmire is continuing the legacy of service by interning at the office of U.S. Rep. Ron Kind in Washington.

Justin Licht, a George Washington University student, is the son of Jan Licht, Proxmire's stepdaughter.

Kind, a Wisconsin Democrat, interned himself for Proxmire while he was a student at Harvard University and helped research wasteful spending of taxpayer money as fodder for the Wisconsin senator's famed "Golden Fleece Awards."

"This summer has really opened my eyes to how many people knew my grandfather, how many lives he touched," said Justin Licht. "Since I have been here, I have heard so many stories, people coming up to me and telling me they met him or they shook his hand."

Proxmire spent 32 years in the Senate and was famous for flying back to Wisconsin nearly every weekend to shake hands with his constituents. He died in December at age 90.

As for a career in politics for Licht, he said the thought of running for office "has definitely entered my mind."

Cycle of life for ya! Always nice to see some updates out of the extended Proxmire family, too.
