"Nuttiest Strategy I Ever Heard In My Life"

LieberDem: President Clinton Defends Lieberman

Quote of the day ... heck, weekend:

On Iraq, first of all I think that we oughta be whipped, we Democrats, if we allow our differences over what to do now in Iraq to divide us instead of focusing on replacing Republicans in the Congress; that?s the nuttiest strategy I ever heard in my life.

Bill Clinton, folks. Of course, this will do little to satisfy those who have long since felt that Bill Clinton was a "good Democrat."

Of course, there's nothing wrong with what Clinton says here, other than he's apparently pushing the dishonest meme that Iraq is the solitary reason so many Dems are pissed at Joe 'Mr. Integrity' Lieberman. Clinton has an opinion and he put it out there. I'd like to know what Clinton has to say about Lieberman's other massive failings - his caving in on Bush's Supreme Court choices, his position that Connecticut women in need of emergency contraception should just keep on drivin' til they find someone who'll help them, his ominous warning to anyone who speaks out against Bush's disastrous policies that they do so "at our nation's peril."

Clinton's comments indicate that he thinks Lieberman is the best chance to keep the Dem seat in Connecticut. That's what primaries are all about. It's too bad that no one followed up with the logical follow-up question - Will you support the winner of the Democratic primary? THAT is the key here. Interesting that Clinton didn't volunteer that he'd support a candidate from the "Connecticut for Lieberman" party. And, of course, we already know what Bill's better half has to say about supporting the primary winner. Don't we, Greg?

It's amazing how not running for President frees one up to speak common sense, doesn't it?

Then again, the wholecloth invention of belief that Clinton is arguing for Lieberman's electability is lost on me. Clinton, of course, says nothing to give that indication. As for what Bill thinks about some silly procedural votes on SCOTUS nominees that were going to pass no matter what ... I'm pretty sure he could care less.

Seriously, is that something you guys are going to peddle now? That we should be stalling Senate business (and hence, American government entirely) just to hold off a Chief Justice nominee till a Democrat is in the White House? Hmmm ... goodbye Voting Rights Act!

I might believe that the war in Iraq was not the principal reason for opposing Lieberman if we found a significant number of people who think Joe was right on the war but are supporting Lamont for some other reason. NARAL and Planned Parenthood are both backing Joe, so it's hard to believe his moderate position on emergency contraception is a driving factor.

The "nation's peril" quote is out of context. Maybe you should look it up and find out what he really said rather than mindlessly parroting the anti-Joe talking points.

You don't have to.

Here's what he said:

It is time for Democrats who distrust President Bush to acknowledge that he will be Commander-in-Chief for three more critical years, and that in matters of war we undermine Presidential credibility at our nation?s peril.

It is time for Republicans in the White House and Congress who distrust Democrats to acknowledge that greater Democratic involvement and support in the war in Iraq is critical to rebuilding the support of the American people that is essential to our success in that war.

On the lefty web, it's usually the first part that gets quoted, usually with the implication that he is trashing the Democrats or some such nonsense.

I doubt that even such a strong partisan such as Bill Clinton would find fault with what Joe was saying.

Also, the former president comes short in his remarks of endorsing Joe even in the primaries, so I don't know why he should weigh in on a hypothetical situation about the general election.
