Blogging the Blogs - Texas Style

DallasBlog.com - Guest Viewpoint - A GUIDE TO TEXAS BLOGS LEFT AND RIGHT By Vince Leibowitz

Great post here by Vince Leibowitz, basically giving a rundown of the Texas blogosphere - both left and right.

A few quibbles if I may, however:

  • Biggest omission from the list? Tom Kirkendall's blog - Houston's Clear Thinkers. Generally right-leaning, I'd peg it as a bit more liberterian. The coverage tends to not be politics in the sense that I or most other "true" polibloggers cover it. But there's a nice swathe of law, business, sports, and even the occassional politics thrown in for good measure. The Enron trial coverage is hard to beat and Tom pretty much has the golf beat all to himself. Another candidate would be Houtopia, which is a truer poliblogger - again, right here outta Houston. More of a once-a-day poster (usually) with a national/state/sometimes local focus on politics, but the quality of the take is pretty hard to top.

  • I think the coverage of the rightward blogs is a bit sparse in Vince's original post. Though they may cover purely political posts in a more sporadic manner, Mattsapundit, Slampo's Place, and ex-Houstonian Rawbservations are worth reading on a regular basis.

  • Since I got berated for including Polimom in my (R) list of local bloggers, I'll correct the matter by putting the blog in a class of it's own. Maybe it was the overreliance of Michelle Malkin links that gave me the impression it was more right-leaning than it is, but a more thorough reading will clearly give clear indications of just another undediced blogger ... one with strong enough opinions to blog about, fortunately.

  • Another separate category belongs to Houstonist , Houston Strategies, Trivial Pursuits, and Perfectly Cromulent Blog (the last two warrant attention on my part due to heavy use of Simpsons references). Again, not purely political blogging to the extent that they don't opine on the latest musings of mayors, governors, and other lesser statesemen among us. But they all add to the mix.

  • Sortofa wait & see category here, but I think whenever Bobby Warren at Progressive Texan gets into a blogging niche, he'll leave us all in his dust.

Granted, my own bias on the exclusions is rather Houston-centric. So maybe I only offer that to demonstrate how truly kick-butt my hometown is when it comes to the blogosphere. Dallas may have us beat in star power; Austin may have us edged ever so slightly in snark (though Laurence Simon hold his own for the H-town homies in this regard). But we do well for ourselves here, too.

I haven't updated Trivial Pursuits since November, so I'm quite certain I warrant nary a mention as a blogger.

Talk about a misnamed blog, it's the one that doesn't
sparkle at all. That's one tired rightwing wannabe.
Tired wornout subject matter that's been beat to death already in other places. More like, YawningTexasStyle. I've read it for the last time.

I must say, I was quite surprised to see the mention of my blog. I was even more surprised to find that I might be leaving others in the "dust", as it were. ;)

Thanks for the kudos, Greg. That may be just what I needed to encourage me to get back in the groove. Setting up shop with my own law practice has been trying, but it seems to be going well enough for me to take time out to opine once again.

Actually, I would be blogging today if not for this little gem regarding the server on which my blog is hosted:

"The US Department of Homeland Security has arrived at our datacenter facility to seize the hard drives from alexandria36.alexsrv36.com due to some illegal content on the machine."

You have to wonder - what "illegal content" was someone hosting on the server that would draw the attention of DHS? Hmmm...
