When Tom DeLay Republicans Attack

I know most of the people who were rallying against Lampson. They're good people. They have the best interests of our party and our nation at heart.
- Chris Elam, Ft. Bend Republican Political Consultant

The still is a photo of a Tom DeLay supporter shoving (with, I'm sure, the best interests of his party and our nation at heart) Marsha Rovai in the face. KPRC supposedly has video of the event, but I've never gotten their video feed to work on my Firefox. Juanita has a better stream of the video showing the incident, or you can just play the embedded video below.

Matt Stoller has the email copy showing the coordination of this event by DeLay campaign manager Chris Homan, who was with the mob.

On the one hand, I keep pinching myself and trying to remember that Christmas isn't till December. I've got to think that, at some point, these folks wake up and realize there's a real job at hand for them to try and hang onto this seat. For now, though, they seem intent on proving Chris Bell correct by demonstrating (quite literally) that Tom DeLay is the gift that keeps on giving. Pushing parents with kids ... shoving 70 year old ladies in the face. Hardly the face of God these people are showing. Maybe they're just saving that for their mugshot.

Regardless of what degree of disgust, shock, and amazement might be derived from such an incident, let's not forget ourselves that there's a job at hand for us ... getting a real Congressman elected to the 22nd. Give a bit to the one good guy in the race: Nick Lampson.

In other news, Gov. Perry seems intent to follow Tom DeLay's wishes and NOT call a special election. What this means is that Tom DeLay will get to orchestrate the hand-selected nominee he wants instead of trusting Republican voters in the 22nd to sort it out. Sugar Land mayor David Wallace might otherwise put a bit of pause in the step of Team Lampson's cause - he's young, he's got some demonstrated electoral success as Sugar Land mayor, and he's popular in an area that has increasingly been dropping Tom DeLay like the bad habit he is in the past few elections. But if he's the handpicked appointee to replace the most corrupt politician in America with someone preferred by the most corrupt politician in America, he'll carry much of that taint himself and the already-present questions of his association with Bob Perry will make life tough for someone with a once-promisting political career.

Seriously now ... where does one get a Christmas tree in Texas at this time of year?

That is one of the most dishonest use of quotations I've ever seen, Greg. From the SAME ARTICLE BY CHRIS:
"I'm sorry. I apologize if I have offended anyone by speaking out so strongly. But today's actions were a bad idea. Bad for Tom DeLay's reputation. Bad for the reputation of Fort Bend Republicans."

You're giving the impression that he is condoning or even supporting the actions. Shame on you.

Lindsey Murff said:

Of course that's what Mr. DeLay is going to say. You think he'd honestly say, in public, that he condones this sort of thing? What he says and what he does behind closed doors are two very different things!!! He also says that he's an innocent man. Speaking from Mr. Delay's actions, he's a liar, a cheat, and he'll condone anything that has the Republican agenda behind it. I am so glad that man is gone.....so long Mr. Delay, don't let the door slam you in the ass!

Umm, Lindsey, I wasn't talking about Tom DeLay. I was talking about Greg's tremendously misleading quotation of my friend, Chris Elam.

Drew,

I'm quite aware of the tone that Chris' overall post struck. But that doesn't negate his trying to have it both ways by saying "Bad deed/salt of the earth people." There's nothing whatsoever misleading about the quote I use. Those are Chris' words. They're properly placed in the context of the events depicted. And they're a reflection of the misguidedness that our young friend has when it comes to people who he relies on to see his candidate win office.

Chris could have done well for his own integrity by just pointing out the poor choice these people have made and left it at that. That's pretty much what Kevin did over at BlogHouston and for once, even I have to applaud Kevin for being forthright about something. Chris, on the other hand, tried to have it both ways. Don't come crying to me that that got pointed out.

Drew said:

There's nothing misleading? Really? So when you pick out the one quote in the article that is NOT criticizing the people and the act, and post only that quote? That's not misleading? That's "placing it in the proper context"? It is obvious to anyone who actually read Chris's post that you are being rather intellectually dishonest with your post and quote. You should be man enough to admit it.

When he uses 366 words criticizing the day's events, and 27 not, that's having it both ways? Please. More with the intellectual dishonesty.

Greg Wythe said:

Ah, so now our friends on the right are speaking on behalf of "anyone." Let it never be said that fallibility never got in the way of your certitude.

In case "anyone" (whoever that is) reads this, it's rather clear that the quote is properly attributed to Chris Elam. It's rather evident to "anyone" who watched the clip that it was one of those very "well intended" people that was seen shoving a 70-yr old woman in the face.

Interesting that you'd want to debate the context and follow the talking points of Kevin & Chris instead of reading Chris' post a bit more critically. In it, he disparages the wisdom of the event. He disparages the notion that it will lead to anything constructive for his side. And yet the people who actually engaged in the event get off free and clear as having the best interest of "anyone" at heart. That is a textbook case of having it both ways. Games, Set, Flip, and Flop.

If Chris' quote applies to anything else or anyone else, then I suspect you may well be the lone intellectually consistent conservative to point out the text by which he does that. If Chris wasn't talking about the person pictured as being an example of someone with the best interests of his party and nation at heart, then where's the verbage that I've left out?

Drew, talk about cherry-picking the quotes. Chris's post's emphasis was about how the protest was a bad idea because it hurt Republicans. Not because it was wrong. Not once did he condemn the shoving of an older woman. He criticized because the actions backfired, not because they were wrong. His interest was clearly the party, not for the behavior itself.
