Pro-Tem Gate
Believe it or not, but I don't have a great deal to add to the situation involving Carol Alvarado's Mayor Pro-tem office scandal. Kuff's got the beat covered rather well.
It's yet to be demonstrated that Carol has any blame on her shoulders. I think there is a question worth asking about the need for the office of Mayor Pro-tem. I think there's a viable question about the system of checks & balances that are currently in place for cutting checks and assigning bonuses to city employees. Texas politics, in general, have not gone through the scandals that have led to the type of restrictions we have at the federal level. But this may nudge us at least a step or two closer.

Tell me if I'm wrong but the knight on the "white" horse here is Mayor White. I just feel he's making an honest effort to clean up the corrupt patterns of behavior down there at city hall. I voted Orlando but I have to give credit where credit is due. I think Mayor White is the unmoving mover here. Silently working behind the scenes sending a message to all city employees. Trying to do his best to scrub the last vestiges of his predecessor off the restroom walls. Possibly saving the worst for last. Bravo Mayor! Am I mistaken here?
When Alvarado accepted the position, she became the responsible party.
Where has she been? Off flitting around the country attending fund raisers instead of taking care of the peoples business.
She needs to at least resign as Mayor Pro Tem, if not organizations that seem to keep her distracted from her City Council jod. Few would object if she steped down from that too.
Freeman,
I suspect you may yet be proven right on your hunch. There's other corroborating evidence that might fit together with such a move. Of course, I say that as one who voted for White, yet have moments of doubt and moments of high respect for the job he's done in office. Time'll tell, I suppose.
Tom/Royko,
One gripe at a time. If Carol has acted as irresponsibly as you suggest with her time and attention, then wouldn't similar problems show up in her district office, which she's been in charge of for over four years?
She inherited FOUR people, not three. She fired Ms. Lee, who was competent and above reproach, and hired a crony, and even tried to change procedures to give that person absolute control.
I see no reason to give her a free pass just becouse problems have not surfaced at her council office. No one has yet scrutinized her dealings.
She had a Fiduciary Duty to manage that office and she failed to perform her duty.

I agree this Alvarado character should go down with the ship. People like here phinagle themselves into a position like this that they have no capacity for. They buy a $500. suit, $50 hair-do and try to act business like. But they haven't got a clue and, of course, deep inside they know it. But they hang on to their little position by hook or (in this case) crook. When things go down they need to go with it. She should resign and even then the Mayor needs to continue to investigate her involvement in the matter. But I expect nothing will happen to her. Does anyone think I might be pleasantly surprised?
