Abramoff (R)

Hotline On Call: This Statement Is False

"Forty of forty five members of the Democrat Senate Caucus took money from Jack Abramoff. Below is a breakdown of how much each Democrat Senator received."

That's courtesy of the NRSC.

But it's not true.

Abramoff has never personally given money to a single Dem. All his personal and family contributions went to Republicans.

Yes -- many of his clients contributed regularly to Dems and GOpers. And maybe some of those donations influenced the actions of elected officials. But if the question is: was Jack Abramoff a Republican? was he committed to furthering the GOP agenda? The answer, clearly, is: yes.

Heads up, Sedosi ... you've been played by the spin machine.

Furthermore, just color me shocked (SHOCKED, I tell you) that Republicans would be so willing to flat-out lie in order to dig themselves out of the grave they created.</snark>

Wow, such enlightened, reasoned debate there with a "dufus" crack. Ya think our Republican friends are feeling a little antsy about how much this smears them?

The very words from the NRSC: Forty of forty five members of the Democrat Senate Caucus took money from Jack Abramoff.

The words our friend here seems to miss from the Washington Post: The charts below reflect 1999-2004 contributions by Abramoff, his tribal clients, and the lobbyists that make up Team Abramoff.

Last I checked, there were several Democratic elected officials that represent many of the tribes that were hustled by Abramoff. Last I also checked, it was Abramoff (not his fellow lobby partners) that was indicted. And as The Hotline's research bears out: Abramoff himself gave to Republicans and Republicans alone.

Then again, when such dazzling minds come up with putdowns like "dufus," why would I possibly expect enlightenment?

I find it interesting that in the reporting on the Abramoff situation, the Republicans that have gotten money from him are generally mentioned by name. Then there is a tag-line sort of like 'there are some Democrats that have gotten money' but no names are mentioned. Are they throwing in the word Democrat just so we don't feel left out? or is the amount of money that the Democrats have received so small that it would be laughable?

Actually, Leif, I find it more interesting that the first line of defense that you hear out of Republicans isn't that corruption, bribery, and extortion are bad things (heaven's forbid that we be so judgemental, someone's feelings might get hurt!) ... but that "other people do it, too." Such a wonderful little moral compass those guys keep handy.

At least on this front, I can give some credit to Newt Gingrich. Dude gets that it's not just one lone henchman that you can pin down as corrupt. It takes a corrupt congressman to take the check. It takes a corrupt staffer to do the work. Guess you could say it takes a village ;-)
