2006: The Harris County Rundown
Kristen Mack goes over the basics of the campaign filings here in Harris County, so I don't have to.
One thing overlooked by Mack, of course, was that Garnet Coleman had not one, but two primary challengers. That was missed in the section covering primary challenges. I don't know the personalities involved, but I may get some info sooner rather than later. I don't think it takes a tinfoil hat to guess the hand of Ron Wilson at work in this, though.
I totally missed the Ben Reyes connection to Kevin Bailey's challenger: John Reyes. District 140 has a sizable black+Hispanic population that ought to provide an opening for someone against fellow Anglo, Kevin Bailey. That said, Bailey's hung on before with ease. He'll likely hang on again.
Al Edwards, of course ... totally different situation.
On another note, the race in District 133 gets some obligatory newsprint:
Seeking the GOP nomination to replace Nixon in House District 133 are Barbara Larson, a former Spring Branch school board member; Jim Murphy, general manager for the Westchase District and a Houston Community College System Board member; and Michael Schofield, who resigned as Gov. Rick Perry's assistant general counsel in September and moved back into the district to run for office. Kristi Thibaut, a fundraiser for political and nonprofit interests, filed in the Democratic primary.
That two of the three GOP candidates in this race represent someone from an ethically beleaguered school district and the Governor's own legal office ought to give you an idea of why District 133 is looking better and better for our side. But then again, Houtopia and myself (twice) have already covered the rationale for that before.
