Another Victim For Hochberg
Sylvia Spivey has filed as a Republican to run against Scott Hochberg (aka - the last man in the state of Texas to pass a school finance bill). Outside of her work with the Briar Meadow Homeowners Association, Spivey's other tracable political involvement seems to be that she donated $10 to Ann Witt.
Fun with press releases ensues ...
HOUSTON ? Republican Sylvia Spivey, who recently served as President of the Briar Meadow Homeowners Association,"recently serves as" ... as opposed to "current" or "outgoing." What are we talking here ... within the last decade? today filed to be the Republican nominee to challenge State Representative Scott Hochberg. Spivey has been encouraged to seek office by numerous community leaders, homeowners and neighbors who are ready for change in Austin. (such as ........... Sheesh, names sure would be nice, ya know.)?I am running for state representative because the district needs a new voice,? said Spivey. ?We need someone whose message will be listened to in Austin (last I checked, we have that) and who will have a seat at the table when important decisions are being made (yeah, like Scott Hochberg, when his GOP committe chair named him to lead a hearing ... or the Hochberg 14 members of the other party that knew well enough to place their district above fealty to Tom Craddick). Spivey?s support is just as diverse as the district she hopes to represent, as a broad range of community and business leaders have already lined up to help. (Again, the absence of names is rather noticable.) ?The encouragement and support from people (such as?) in the district has been overwhelming (not to mention ... silent!),? said Spivey.
?Recent stalemates in Austin (unlike the singular productive moment led by Scott Hochberg) prove that we need new energy and a renewed commitment to finding real solutions for real problems in Southwest Houston,? said Spivey. ?First, we need to make certain the students, teachers and parents of District 137 know they come before the partisan education rhetoric we?ve endured for so long. (And fortunately, they do with Scott!) But we also need the people to know I am aware there are other issues to be addressed,? added Spivey. ?Issues I?m not certain get the attention they deserve right now.? (Such as???)
A lifelong resident of Southwest Houston, Spivey is a graduate of the University of Houston, and recent alum of Leadership Houston. She is currently employed by Continental Airlines. Sylvia and her husband Randy are raising their two children just blocks from her childhood home. The daughter of Cuban immigrants, Spivey?s bilingual skills have aided her community involvement and as a volunteer at local public schools.
Spivey?s diverse experience (aka - unfocused?) and deep knowledge of the district (can't wait to see if she does something that the previous challenger didn't ... like campaigning in the not-so-nice parts of the district) will make her the effective representative District 137 needs.
Ah, the smell of fresh blood ....
Keep laughing webboy. But I think you're right about Spivey being different from the previous challenger. Yes, there are a lot of unanswered questions, as there are about ANY new candidate (as opposed to the lifer you adore with twinkling eyes). But don't worry, you're going to have 11 long months to fill in all the blanks.
All my best,
John
Last time I checked, I/we campaigned in every part of the District and knocked on every voter's door. I guess you know something the rest of us don't.
Too funny, Lee. I must have missed that knock upon my door. Were things so tight that you couldn't have even left a doorhanger? And when I met with voters in my own precinct (as well as several neighboring ones), not a one of them recalled meeting a Republican candidate/campaign representative. Are you sure you were campaigning in the right district?
