Thanksgiving and "Catchup" ... Sports Edition

It just wouldn't be Thanksgiving weekend without some sports ...

Euless Trinity 63, El Paso Franklin 14
Trinity High seems to have found another gear by pouncing on a Final 8 team in the state playoffs. The stats sheet on this one looks ridiculous ... 622 total yards, 269 rushing yards for Dmitri Nance. This had all the makings of a high school homecoming game, not a serious playoff game. Franklin High, I'm sure, wasn't a pushover. The game was a mere 21-7 score at the half. But it would seem that Trinity is now well positioned for it's tango with A&M Consolidated (11-2) next weekend. A win there gets us our second shot at the state finals. If I might be so bold as to wish for an opponent in the finals, please let it be Converse Judson. Our previous finals was a then-Cinderella Trinity team squaring off against a then-perrenial powerhouse Judson team. Working against that hope is that Judson has to beat undefeated Spring Westfield to get a shot at us.

Houston 35, Rice 18
Well, we're bowl-eligible. That's something. I guess. Apparently, the Ft. Worth Bowl is interested in the Coogs. I may well have to make it out to see that since the parental units are up in the Mid Cities. Then again, there's 6 bowl-eligible teams out of C-USA, with 5 bowl tie-ins. Houston has to be the weakest draw of the bunch in terms of fan base and television interest. I wish it weren't the case.

Texas 40, Texas A&M 29
God bless the Aggies for making this one interesting. I kept expecting the Longhorn depth and speed to finish this off at the start of the second half, but we found ourselves with a game going on in the 4th. I can't complain about that, even if I didn't get to watch the Longhorns lose. Man that woulda been sweet.

LSU 19, Arkansas 17
Somewhere, there's a Razorback kicker looking for his car. I had absolutely no rooting interest in this game, but by the time I flipped over to see what other pigskin was on the tube, this one looked like a potential upset in the making. Didn't happen, but ya still gotta love potential upsets like this late in the season. Rumors are that Arkansas is the other "prominent" team in negotiations to move to the Big 12 (making it a Big 14) along with the Coogs. I can see Arkansas making the move, I'm continually doubtful that UH should remain a Division 1 school.

Dallas Cowboys 21, Denver Broncos 24 (OT)
Tough day for the Cowboys.

Suvivor Guatemala
Tough day for the ex-Cowboys, too.

Hadn't heard the Arkansas-to-Big 12 rumor. Living in New England, the little college football coverage that is available tends to dwell on the ACC (BC), Big East (UConn, Syracuse), or Notre Dame.

The Big 12 is really a better geographical fit for the Hogs. If someone has figured out a way to plan a weekend road trip from Fayetteville to Gaineville or Columbia, please let me know. In the Big 12, you'd have Mizzou, OSU, OU, Kansas and K-State all within a reasoable distance, and you'd bring back the rivalries with the Horns and the Aggies.
