Week 5 High School Football: Moving On Up
In the only game that matters (well ... to me), the Trinity Trojans rack up another one to go 5-0. But in a twist, they have to fight from a 14-0 deficit before they take one offensive snap:
Nimitz (3-2, 0-2) opened with a 10-play, 80-yard drive that resulted in a David Watkins' 2-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing pooch kick, Trinity failed to catch the ball in the air. Nimitz's Steve Nwobi alertly grabbed the ball after one bounce at the Trinity 23-yard-line to give Nimitz possession.Eight plays later, Watkins was in the end zone again ? this time from 1 yard out ? to make it 14-0. Watkins finished with 112 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries.
Trinity used 2:27 to score two touchdowns and tie the game. On the third play of its first possession, Trinity quarterback Trevor Vittatoe connected with Marcus King for a 49-yard touchdown pass. King outjumped Nimitz defensive back Cedric Kirk for the ball at the 10-yard-line and went in for the score.
Reads like one heck of a game. I'm still on edge to see a signature, breakout, sine qua non passing performance out of Trevor Vittatoe (I'll settle for a commitment to the University of Houston, however). He went 4-6 passing, but managed a nifty 146 yards in the game. Dmitri Nance, of course, rolls on: 18-176 yards ... but only one touchdown. Stats like that remind me of NBA defensive legend Bo Outlaw (ok, so he's only a legend to me). Upon Bo's first big offensive scoring game as a pro, I remember chatting with the folks at 610AM to get a few more details since I only learned of the performance while listening there. Seems he only had 2 blocked shots in the game, which was less than half his usual, so the joke was that it wasn't that great of a game after all. Kudos, though, to fellow running back LaDerrick Handy ... he netted three touchdowns on 116 yards rushing. Sheesh, why is this Trojan offensive line making me think there's a few Nebraska Cornhuskers going back to high school in Euless?
Anyways, the journey upward continues. We were #5 in the AP State rankings going in. I don't see any losses on the board for the other four ahead of us, so the climb to the top waits for an upset. Matters not, of course ... the playoff's the thing and we've known disappointment for too long there. More and more, it's looking like Coach Lineweaver's really got a focused team with loads of talent this year. Hopes are now officially a few notches higher than before.
