Stupid Quote of the Day

HoustonChronicle.com - What's next, asks gay-marriage foe, polygamy?

State Rep. Warren Chisum on Prop 2:

"If you start down that road, where do you stop? Do you have multiple partners?"

Let's see ... if your aim is to prevent polygamy, why not have THAT on the ballot instead of beating up gay folks?

I'm sure there might well have been some worthwhile debate between Chisum and Anne Wynne mentioned in this story, but you wouldn't know it from the Chron's coverage. Here's the full extent they give anything Wynne covers:

Austin lawyer Anne Wynne, representing a coalition against the amendment, said banning same-sex marriages violates American values of "fairness, equality and honoring commitment."

She likened the struggle for legal acceptance by same-sex couples to the nation's prolonged struggle over civil rights for women and racial minorities, including the right of interracial marriage.

"There is no difference now from when we let the last group in, that last group that got the right to ride in the front of the bus, the last group that got the right to have their vote count in court and to be allowed to marry who they choose," she said.

Ya see, gay marriage isn't even really the issue here. Marriage is defined at both the state and federal level as being between a man and a woman. While there's plenty of folks out there who think that's unfair, I happen to be among those who think that that's as it should be.

But Prop. 2 isn't about whether or not we should have gay marriage in Texas. It's about whether or not we want to rewrite a good chunk of law in this state that protects domestic relationships (of all kinds). The worst feature of Prop. 2 that I challenge any so-called conservative (or other supporter of the Prop.) to defend, is the language prohibiting recognition of anything "similar to marriage." That doesn't have a whit to do with gays or polygamy ... that has everything to do with legal cases involving companies that offer benefits to domestic partners and everything to do with legal protection in cases of domestic violence. This is a proposition that doesn't do a lick of good, but would manage to do a lot of bad.

Literally speaking ... LITERALLY ... Warren Chisum's aim is to aid and abet people who beat up gay people.

Real nice.

I happen to be among those who believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. But I also happen to be among those who will be voting against this piece of drivel in November.
