Sports Saturday ...

Yes, more diversion ...

  • In the college world, the big game of the week is Texas vs Ohio St. As an avid UH Cougar, it's my responsibility to root for whoever plays UT, so in that spirit, I encourage folks to go over to BurntOrangeReport.com and predict an OSU win just to rile them up. Did I mention that this is a responsiblity? Scratch that ... obligation.

  • In Coogville, we have our own powerhouse matchup with Sam Houston State. This is the game that, should we somehow NOT win it, we openly question the coach's future with our program. And we're still pretty optimistic about Art Briles as coach.

Also worth noting on the upcoming sched for the Coogs. We had a date @ Tulane which is obviously not going to happen. The Green Wave have enrolled at Lousiana Tech, with the Tulane teams will compete as originally planned (minus the playing field). No word that I've run across on where Tulane's home games are getting moved to, though. I suspect they'll juggle some stadium dates in-state, but I have a hunch there could be some oddities on the Tulane schedule, like the possiblity of playing a "home" game at the opposing school's digs. I'd look for Tulane to play with a good deal of heart this season, whatever the setting.

  • The NFL week has the obvious drama of the Saints opening against Carolina. Normally, I'm a tad indifferent to the NFL season, but seeing how the Saints adapt is more than a curiosity.

  • And all the football that really matters most - high school football - has a bye week for me. The Trinity Trojans were idle Friday. They presently rank #2 in the DFW area and the FWST has a pretty interesting read on the drool-worthy matchup of the Trojans with the top team in the state: Southlake Carrol. The two teams not only share proximity in the polls, they're also about 8 miles apart from one another. And there's a chance the schools may not even be in the same playoff race (thanks to the peculiar oddities of Texas' UIL regulations). But if that's the case, there's one idea in the mix that I love the sound of:

"Every year, there's going to be a couple teams emerge that you say, 'Man those two teams need to get together,'" Tipps said.

The teams are there. Longtime Carroll fan Phil Barber had a perfect idea on when and how to do it, too.

"After we both win state," Barber said, "play a game for the New Orleans refugees. A fund-raiser."

Don't discount this idea ... living in the DFW Mid Cities in the 80s (ie - during an NFL strike), I was witness to more than a few matchups that drew tens of thousands in attendance. It'd be a challenge to top the playoff crowd that inter-district rivals LD Bell and Trinity drew in 1982, but it's a welcome challenge for a good idea.

Yeah, I know ... eggs hatching and all that. We'll revisit this idea later.

Greg, Greg, Greg, when are ya gonna lose those sour grapes and just admit that Texas is where it's at? Who are these "Cougars" anyway? I'll be thinkin' about ya as I pound'em back and watch UT march on to victory! Hook'em Horns

Hey, what city did Vince Young play high school ball in, anyway?

    Nyah, nyah!

Look, they had great D, and our special teams ... let's not talk about them. But, as Coach Brown likes to say, the Horns are in there all four quarters.

Ah well ... it's a long season and all it takes is one Horn loss to end the dream. I can wait. Besides, the Coogs won as well. I count that as a good day.

Again who are these Cougars you speak of?
