One More Star Wars Note ...

One thing that amazes me about the latest Star Wars installation is the number of minor points of connection to "New Hope" that we the viewer miss despite everyone else noticing them. I was starting to feel somewhat down on myself when I realized I'd missed the emergence of the Death Star late in the movie. Checked the web for reviews and script ... sure enough, everyone else caught it. I felt a little better when I pointed out to the other party in this conversation that Obi picks up Anakin's light saber at the big volcano duel. Another point where I can breathe easy is that Kevin Drum misses this:

Why the reference at the end to Obi-Wan continuing his training with the ghost of Qui-Gon? I didn't object to it or anything, but it seemed kind of pointless since we know it will never be followed up on.

Pointless??? It merely explains some of the key differences we see in The Force between Episodes 1-3 and 4-6, not to mention that it pretty much explains practically all unanswered questions pertaining to the Dagobah scene in RotJ.

*sigh*

Yes, I am a complete dweeb. Sue me.

ADD-ON: Oh,and if I might add a little crank on the Mighty Matt Yglesias ... No, you do NOT have to imagine the schmaltzy acting to realize the decrepitude of the Anakin/Padm? "From the moment I met you" scene. Humphrey Bogart, at his prime, could not have made that scene any less comical.

ADD-ON 2.0: Sheila is all over this movie from a completely different angle and I'm starting to ponder the notion that this might well qualify her as the world's coolest woman ever. Just go here and click the "Next" links till you've pretty much read the entire book that she's essentially transcribed ... the "cool parts", at least.

When Obi-Wan and Darth Vader battle in IV, Obi-Wan says something like "If you destroy me I shall become more powerful than ever." It came to mind when the Qui-Gon line came up in III.

Kevin didn't get it??!?!

I thought it was utterly obvious. It clearly explains exactly what seth is referring to.
