CD22: More Quan Rumors

HoustonChronicle.com - Mack on Politics: Quan studies his odds in a DeLay challenge

Gordon, let's be blunt ... you'd lose this election. Both in the primary and the general election. The general election is a foregone conclusion ... all DeLay has to do is drop a little mail and maybe one TV ad buy to note your opposition to Iraq and support for reparations, and you're done. As if he would need any more material, all it would take is to openly suggest how the DNC is recruiting all these outsiders to come in and tell the fine folks of Ft. Bend County, Brazoria County ... and even Clear Lake, how to run their affairs.

But fear not, because more critically, you'd lose the primary before you ever had to worry about these things. Richard Morrison is building the party from the ground up in areas covered by his district. He'll have candidates running for every single office touched by the 22nd if he has his way with it - and he's already taken that task upon himself. I'm certain there's still ample love for you in the few Houston precincts the 22nd district covers, but that's not a lot. You may also inspire a few Asian voters to move over to the Dem side of things if you were to run and God bless you for tapping into such inspiration. But we've still got a math problem that puts you on the losing side of this equation.

Bottom line, Richard Morrison is the best candidate for this race. He's from Ft. Bend County. He's made a run at the district before, tapping into both local and national resources. If ANY Democrat is to have success in November 2006, it will only happen if the big national donors realize early on that we've got the best candidate in place for this race and shut all talk of candidate recruitment down for any other alternatives. Simply put, no Houston City Councilman, of either party, can possibly go into Sugar Land (where most voters move to to get AWAY from Houston) and have a chance at success. To conclude otherwise is delusional.

Full Disclosure: I don't do a lick of work for the Morrison campaign other than blog the occassionally highly opinionated post in full support for the man. In fact, next payday I see, the Morrison camp can expect a whopping two-digit donation outta me, making my income from the Morrison campaign a net negative amount.

I think you hint around at it, but let's go ahead and say it straight out.

Ain't no big-city politician gonna play.

In the suburbs, the animus towards the central city can be immense, even if somewhat subconscious.

On point.

Gordon Quan ought to take on John "More hot towels, Mr. DeLay?" Culberson in the 7th.
