Al Edwards: Big Issues Are For Sissies
HoustonChronicle.com - House measure adds bite to leash law in Houston
I missed this a few days ago, but apparently, it seems Al Edwards is still hard at work, pushing those big important issues through the Texas lege. In this case, setting jail time for dog owners whose dogs bite people.
Sheesh, Al ... is this REALLY the best you can do?
What a dumb remark! Irresponsible ownership of vicious dogs, bred for viciousness, is a serious public health and safety issue. Not long ago a woman walking along Braes Bayou, near my home, was attacked by three pit bulls. The problem has greatly increased in recent years. Only an idiot would deride the seriousness of this issue.
"Not long ago a woman walking along Braes Bayou, near my home, was attacked by three pit bulls. The problem has greatly increased in recent years."
Not to deride any individual point of pain or suffering, but you point to ONE local example and then follow it up with the statement that the problem is "greatly increased" and then resort to namecalling based on my derision of Al Edwards' sponsorship of this bill (contrasted to his non-committal stance on issues such as school finance and taxes ... also problem that have greatly increased).
Back to reality ....
Al Edwards' law only applies to Houston. Does this problem not exist in other parts of Texas? ... or other major urban counties? Furthermore, there are already laws on the books that define jail time and punishment for negligible owners. Edwards' bill just ups the penalties for those attacks that violate the leash law. NOT covered by this is the fact that most dog attacks occur WHILE the dog is chained. If you believe this law will lead to greater enforcement of such instances as that which you mention, I've got oceanfront property in Nebraska for you. That instance you cite is already covered by law. Al Edwards did nothing for that person. He just continues to make an ass of himself as a favor for Republicans.
But no, my remarks were dumb. Serves me right for reading the article and knowing a little bit about the existing law, huh?
That said, why not kill two birds with one stone and make dirty cheerleading dances punishable by facing a pack of rabid pit bulls? It really would fit with Al Edwards' role in tackling the big issues that confront us here in the Bayou City.
Your arguments are straw dogs -- knocking down issues that you raised, not me. The fact is the fact, dangerous dogs have been causing problems far and wide in recent years. Any attempts to downplay the foolishness of your remarks just inflames your error. I supposed next you want to make fun of Terry Schiavo for not taking better care of herself?
Oh please, Dale ... foolish? Now who's inventing straw dogs?
There's already laws on the books for what Al is narrowly focusing on. Your "serious" extent is already covered by law and nothing that Al Edwards proposes even remotely addresses it.
It's an attempt to look like you're working on an issue while narrowly defining the problem to a degree that it is literally meaningless. I defy you to look at Edwards' bill and point to one real life situation that would have been covered differently than existing law already covers. When you show me that REAL dog, then we can talk about who's being serious here.
