Back to Rhode Island ...

BostonHerald.com - National Politics: Mom's woes may stunt Pat K's Senate hopes

Rumors have been swirling that Kennedy (D-R.I.) would seek to join his dad, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy [related, bio] (D-Mass.) on Capitol Hill by making a run next year to unseat powerful incumbent Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-R.I.). Those flames were fanned last week when U.S. Rep. James Langevin (D-R.I.) dropped out of the Senate race. Kennedy's spokesman Sean Richardson said no decision has been made.

"There's definitely no news on the Senate issue,'' Richardson said.

But those close to the 37-year-old congressman say the burden of his mother's worsening alcoholism will likely prevent him from a Senate run. Kennedy, who is single and lives in Rhode Island, is expected to become his mother's permanent caretaker. His brother, Edward M. Kennedy Jr., is married with children and lives in New Haven, Conn., while their sister, Kara Allen Kennedy, is a mother who lives in Maryland.

The countdown is now back on for Jim Langevin's re-emergence in the Senate race.

Maybe Schumer and Reid can take another shot at convincing Langevin to run.

First of all, I wish the Kennedy family well, and hope that Joan seeks - with the support of her family - the help she needs. On a practical level, we really have to concentrate on picking up this seat. There is way too much at risk next year. I, too, hope Langevin will reconsider.
