Sweeps Week: Day III

Daily Kos :: Lieberman, disloyal Dem

Let's talk about typecasting, shall we?

Markos Zuniga ... you're full of it.

For the record, Joe pushed a rule change back back in 1995 that allowed for a decrease in the votes required to break a filibuster. Plan being that vote one would require 60, then it would go down by 3 votes each time around till it got to 51.

Who was the other Democratic sellout that pushed for this bill?

Tom Harkin.

Fortunately for Joe, he's being consistent with himself. Damn shame that some Democrats will just have no truck with principle.

UPDATE: More on the Harkin-Lieberman amendment of 1995:

The Harkin-Lieberman proposal was endorsed by 19 Democratic Senators and the New York Times, which opined at the time that the filibuster ?frustrates democracy and serves no useful purpose.?

UPDATE 2.0: So who were the sellouts who supported this nefarious Lieberman plot to end filibusters? Read em and weep:

Bingaman (D-NM)
Boxer (D-CA)
Bryan (D-NV)
Bumpers (D-AR)
Feingold (D-WI)
Graham (D-FL)
Harkin (D-IA)
Kennedy (D-MA)
Kerrey (D-NE)
Kerry (D-MA)
Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Lieberman (D-CT)
Moseley-Braun (D-IL)
Pell (D-RI)
Pryor (D-AR)
Robb (D-VA)
Sarbanes (D-MD)
Simon (D-IL)
Wellstone (D-MN)

Notable "sellouts" emphasized.

What's the difference between Lieberman and Al Edwards?
It's not 1995 anymore.

That made absolutely no sense.

It's official...Markos is completely unhinged. He resembles no one so much as Captain Ahab, lashed to his personal white whale.

Frankly, I await the day next year when Lieberman steamrolls whatever member of the Perpetually Indignant Wing of the Democrat Party throws against him.

The parallel I was trying to draw is this: your criticism of Al Edwards seems indistinguishable from Kos' critiques of Lieberman. My "it's not 1995 anymore" reference was to Ed Martin's letter about Al -- saying the happy bipartisan days of the 1990's are over. Why doesn't that apply at the federal level?

Well, if you recall, the 1995 amendment was introduced as the Republicans took over the Senate and was favored by many of those to Joe's left due to the belief that such a bill would aid President Clinton in getting legislation through.

The "It's not 1995" comparison is way off in that regard. Now, if you wanted to suggest 1985 or 1981 ... maybe you'd have a point. But Joe wasn't in Congress then.

My criticism of Al is not that he's failing to cast 100% lockstep votes from his deep navy blue district. Had HB3 been the only contrarian vote, I'd hardly have a thing to say. But he's 0-fer-9 in terms of contentious votes thus far. He's voting against the very principles he himself has stated in speech after speech after speech.

Meanwhile, I point out Joe's consistency over time and highlight how he is specifically sticking to principle on issues such as Iraq and filibusters.

Huge difference.
