Bell to Perry: We're Watching
Via email ....
STATEMENT BY CHRIS BELL ON HB 23 There is no logical basis to link insurance rates to credit ratings. If someone is late on his credit card bill, that does not mean that a tornado is going to hit his barn. Economic redlining only serves to protect the profits of insurance companies, and we have a moral mandate to stop this now and to lower the barriers to home ownership. This is not a partisan issue. The sponsors of HB 23 are Republicans, and in 2002, Rick Perry promised to end credit scoring in Texas. He was right to take that election-year stand back then, and though his appointee at the Texas Department of Insurance is protecting economic redlining, the Governor would do well to keep his earlier promise.

This is great. Rick Perry thought he saw the last of this issue in 2002, but we need to shine a light on this now. Way to go, Chris Bell.
Chris Bell is right on this one. As a low-income student who has struggled with both credit problems and insurance, I fear that my future will be a series of hurdles because of unfair credit ratings. When the time comes to by a home, I want to know that my economic status is not an excuse to hike rates so the insurance companies can make some extra money. I'm glad to see someone like Chris Bell is taking the right step in the right direction.
Found the website for Chris Bell. Oddly, it's at ChrisBell.com. I think it's important for all of us to get behind him early. We need a real Democrat running for Governor.
It's hard to think of any good reason why credit ratings should have anything to do with insurance rates. Why is my home more likely to be hit by a devastating flood because I messed up with my Visa card in college? It seems to me like enough people already make money off my younger idiocy. Bank of America, American Express and Discover certainly did and continue to do so. I can understand why creditors are able to charge me higher rates for a while, but why should an insurance company be able to?
I remember Perry making a big deal out of this in 2002, and that's all that it's been since: a memory. It's good to see Chris Bell and the Democrats taking a stance to protect people from predatory insurance companies.
It's nice to see a Democrat stand up for the rest of us. I hope Chris Bell keeps it up until he kicks Perry out of office next November
Chris Bell is a man who can walk the walk. Let's get a guy in Austin who sticks up for Texans and not insurance. ChrisBell.com provides a good starting point for our next governor.
This is all about the hypocrisy that comes from a politician who's too comfortable in office.
As far as I'm concerned, we couldn't pick a better candidate than one who got redistricted out by the man who's got the Governor's office wrapped around his pinky.
