HB2: Another Bad Idea?

As good a time to get off my duff and update my 2006 candidate listings. HISD trustee, Harvin Moore, is not going to be a candidate for State Rep, as initially rumored. Good thing. Looking over his bio and street cred, and I figured he'd be one tough customer to beat if he ever ran for partisan office. Most impressive in this quarter was his involvement with the KIPP Academies.

Even more impressive is his denunciation of HB2.

The Austin Chronicle has a good deal more on HB2, though I've got to think it a mix of paranoia with a small dose of reality mixed in (just because people are out to get public school doesn't make one paranoid).

One of the tragedies of Texas politics is that the left has ceded much of the charter school movement to the Leningers of the world and the result has been occassional setbacks in the chartering of new schools as being too rapid and too ill-conceived at times ... as well as the fact that too many on the Dem side of the ledger haven't been constructive advocates for making charter schools more effective. Of course, full disclosure demands I note that my own State Rep (mentioned in the AusChron article) is a nice exception to the rule.
