Lines Forged in Sand
I've watched from the sidelines as the CBS/Rather/Forgery claims go back and forth with a sense of detachment. About the only factors on the story that hasn't gone according to my call is that none of the mud has landed on Bush and he remains hoisted on his own petard. So why has this happened? Because the liberal media has been blinded by their Dean-loving Bush-hatred mindset that so permeates its ranks? No, quite the opposite ... besides, I never dug mythology. Other sites are devoted to the artform, if you prefer.
What I'm surprised is that the missed story here is how the liberal media has pretty much been ... well ... not very liberal in their coverage of the story and its aftermath. Instead, the bulk of the media has done exactly what the right-leaning media critics have desired it do in moments such as this ... cower in fear lest they too be smeared with the tag of "liberal media."
As for CBS, what they've shown is not so much a liberal bias, but the fallacy of Big Media believing it has the means and wherewithal to give a controversial story the full investigation it needs. So it was that in the process of defending the documents, they pull out someone to look at the signature ... as if that had been the point of contention. Myopia isn't just a liberal disease ... it afflicts the lazy, too.
Now, whether or not anyone other than myself accepts that, I care not one bit. But more difficult to answer is why the rest of the so-called liberal media has not come rushing to CBS's defense. I mean, the Houston Chronicle is liberal, right (or so I'm tole)? So where are they? Where's the LA Time's scathing Op/Ed entitled "These Charges Are True"? Where's the editor of a Chicago paper coming out of the woodworks of silence to defend CBS? Regardless of one's acceptance of CBS as universally (or merely predominantly) liberal, where's the rest of that liberal media that I keep hearing so much about?
Maybe its too much in knowing that the minute anyone speaks up to defend the memos, they'll be slammed for miscounting the number of GOP legislators in office somewhere. I mean, who can possibly stand up to that sort of brushback? Certainly not that so-called liberal media.

I think they smell fraudulent documents and want to get the hell away from the blast radius when it hits CBS
If the forgery takes down CBS, they don't want it tainting or taking down their news orgs with it. They'd love to help CBS but when it's this bad, they're on their own
