Weekend Shopping
A rather unusual weekend in that I actually managed to get a few pop-culture things taken care of, namely raid a Half-Price Bookstore and stop by the local Infinite Record Convention. I feel at least a little caught up, in a cultural sense.
Books procured are as follows:
The Rise of Southern Republicans by Earl & Merle Black
Actually browsed through it a long time ago. Having read some of the Black brothers' earlier work, this is definitely well-researched, well-told, and an informative read. In other words, its good political history without a great deal of poli-sci wonkery going on in the text. Earl & Merle rarely disappoint.
Friendship and Society by Donald Burt
I turned down a copy of a Gary Wills version of Augustine's history in favor of this one. It tempted me as a good tie-in to review alongside the Dan Coats book, touches on a lot of Augustine's political worldview, and even has some nice little theological underpinnings for those moderates of the world.
From the big chain bookstore, I finally managed to get my copy of the 9/11 Report. Snuck a read of the first chapter and have to admit that at least that part reads well enough to stir up the same anger and vitriol that one might otherwise have felt on 9/11 itself. The rest looks a bit dry and studious, but still worthwhile reading.
