Election Roundup

Bigger primary news around the nation worth passing on ...

  • Virginia Democratic Congressman Jim Moran survives a challenge, winning his primary contest 58-42.

  • South Carolina had a busier calendar, with two GOP candidates facing a runoff for the Senate nomination: Jim DeMint and David Beasley will have a slugfest to see who runs against Inez Tenenbaum in November. OpinionJournal's Political Diary notes that the two free-trade candidates won a majority and senses that Beasley's support has topped out in the first round. Another race worth noting is a primary contest in which the state's House GOP leader was offed. OJ notes it was due "... in part because of his refusal to back Governor Sanford's agenda or sign a new anti-tax pledge from Americans for Tax Reform." The State, however, notes a more practical reason:

Quinn, who has spent 16 years in the House, had worked with Democratic state Sen. Vincent Sheheen on a major tax reform bill that would have shifted responsibility for school funding from property taxes to the state.

Also during the campaign, Quinn was targeted for defeat by the Conservation Voters of South Carolina, a recently formed group that endorses candidates based on their environmental records.

The group, which disagreed with Quinn's support for loosening rules on huge hog farms, sent three mailers to about 3,000 voters, said Ann Timberlake, its executive director.

During his tenure, Quinn also drew criticism from some Lexington County residents when he worked to pass legislation that shifted one seat on the Lexington-Richland 5 school board to Richland County.
