District F Update

I can't believe I missed this one ....

Four diverse candidates await voters in District F

Seems Terry McConn is the son of former Mayor Terry McConn, AND the same guy who managed the Bellaire Little League team to the LLWS.

The John Shike roller coaster, however is well worth noting:

Shike has run before for public office, but under different names. He ran unsuccessfully for an at-large City Council seat in 1977 and also ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primary for state Legislature in 1980 and 1982. In two races, he ran as Bob A. Sheikh; in another, Robert Daniel Shike. Shike said he legally changed his name for reasons of astrology and religion.

Shike made the news in 1997 when the late state District Judge John Montgomery fined him $67,000 for misconduct during a divorce action that featured his request to videotape the trial so he could get a Pakistani death sentence for his ex-wife, Saba Hameed Shike. Shike also was jailed for more than two months on the misdemeanor charge of fraudulently obtaining a mental health warrant to have her committed.

Shike, who later called Montgomery "a madman" and argued that the woman was never legally married to him, said he was "a victim of the system."

One word: Wow!

Seems like I have one real option here: Derrick Wesley. That said, I'm curious to see if McConn follows in the footsteps of the former moderate GOP types that seem to come from this district. I'd say I'd like to get to know more about him, but there's no website for McConn to be found.

The county GOP, however, is gung-ho for Khan. Khan has also done a good deal of mailing based on what I've gotten at home. So there's three trends here to pay attention to:

  • Does the McConn name carry any weight?
  • Can the lone black candidates, Wesley get into the runoff as Dionne Roberts did previously?
  • Can Khan spend enough to overcome those two, to the extent that they exist.

Right now, I'd have to say Wesley's odds might be longest ... he seems to have no money. So could a district that went 55% for Ron Kirk in 2002 have 2 GOP types to pick from in a runoff? Odds seem to point to yes, but I wouldn't be shocked if Wesley finds a way to end up in there instead.
