The Chron Endorses White

Chron: FOR BILL WHITE

With regard White's major opponents: We believe state Rep. Sylvester Turner has been an able legislator, an effective advocate for Houston and a positive leader. Former city Councilman Orlando Sanchez also has been a community leader but, in our estimation, lacks a key ingredient, managerial experience equal to the task of leading a $2 billion-plus enterprise such as the city of Houston.

In our strong-mayor government the holder of that office has to be respected enough to persuade others to his agenda, but also respectful enough to consider the concerns of others.

He will have to set the tone, to be able to put pressure on all to work together more closely together, within the region, with Austin and with Washington. To put innovative ideas ahead of intractable ideology.

Houston's next mayor has to be able to articulate, organize and actualize solutions to the city's problems.

Easier said than done? Of course.

But, we believe Bill White, by virtue of his background, experience and abilities has the best chance of leading the city where it needs to go.

... ditto.
