Campaign Math
HoustonChronicle.com - Sanchez spends $59.5 million in costly race
I have to admit, I skipped over the headline when I read the paper earlier, and only read the story now out of sheer boredom. Nevertheless, towards the end, there's some interesting info on the Lite Gov race campaign spending.
Dewhurst is obviously self-financing his race, so there's not much to be expected. But Sharp has raised $6.6 mill and spent $8 mill. That's pretty key there and indicative that the race is close. The way the show goes, winning candidates will typically collect on payday ... er, I mean Election Day. Those donors who want to be on the winning side, usually go cross town to pay homage to the victor whose capaign they did not support, and drop off a nice check to make their presence known. Happened when Ann Richards won in 1990, most notably.
The Lite Gov race is obviously the biggest campaign in the state at this point because it does have some sway in the way things go around the state, and its the closest race going.
Surprisingly, the cash campaign for the AG race has been about even, $6.87-$5.5 million in favor of Abbott. Most Dems across Texas will take that kind of race any day of the week.
John Williams had a nice article on Dewhurst yesterday that I forgot to link then, so I'm doing so now. Its not really favorable, and its not really a hatchet job either. Just another conventional wisdom peice, more or less. The guy's a recluse as opposed to Sharp, who's a schmoozer.

Dewhurst looks like a Ken doll. I just can't get around that - he's an antisocial Ken doll. Add to that the fact that he was a CIA agent in Bolivia, and you've got one odd fellow.
