Texas Politics 201

HoustonChronicle.com - Sanchez blasts Perry for ad linking Dem to murder

Now, I have seen both versions of the Sanchez ad which, IMO, is a subtle jab to the chest. And I have also seen this ad, referenced by the Chron article. I won't go to the extent of saying its "Willie Horton" appalling, but its within range. Short version of the story, drug lords who deposited money in Sanchez's S&L are the same drug lords who killed a DEA agent. So the Perry campaign is basically trying to pin a murder rap on Sanchez. This is a low point for Texas political campaign ads .. right up there with Mark White prancing around in front of grainy large-size photos of death row inmates he claims to have personally fried.

My policy is, and always has been, that political campaign ads are an excercise in finding where the populous' limit is. I'm not sure Perry's ad really goes over the line. I'm not, because, quite frankly, I don't think Mark White even found that limit. Sadly, there's still room to go. There will no doubt be more hue and cry over the ad as Sanchez tries to work in a little backlash angle over it. But bring on your murder raps, folks. Bring us your drug kingpins, bring us your despots and villians. We here in Texas have an election to put on and demand suitable entertainment value.

You know, I was pretty young when Mark White was running (be it in 1982, 1986, or 1990) and I remember practically nothing from any of those campaigns.

Except that ad.

Whitlock

I remember that ad, the Clayton Williams primary ads and probably one of the most brilliant ads later on in the general election: Ann Richards using Clayton's words against him. Sheer genius.

Then again, I'm old.
